All Souls Lenten Retreat

The Motions of the Soul & the Enneagram

March 10-11

Our Lady of the Angels Retreat Center, Lemont

Have you experienced highs and lows in your life with Christ? In his Spiritual Exercises, Ignatius of Loyola called these the “motions of the soul” or the interior movements of our hearts. They include our thoughts, feelings, and desires.

Consolation & Desolation

Ignatius taught that in the examen, we identify these movements as either consolations that give us a deep sense of life-giving presence with God and others or desolations when we feel the loss of God’s presence and alienation from others. The Enneagram is an ancient spiritual tool that can aid us in gaining a deeper understanding of the habits of our minds, hearts, and desires that lead us into consolations and desolations.

Retreat Theme

This retreat will be led by Clare Loughrige, pastor, spiritual director, and author of three books on the Enneagram, including The Enneagram and Ignatian Spirituality. Clare will show how the Enneagram is not meant to be used as a “personality test” to box oneself into a “type” but as a life-giving practice towards self-understanding.

Retreat Format

The retreat will include teaching on the Harmony Triad system Clare developed for the Enneagram. There will also be guided reflections on the examen and the Enneagram, as well as breaks throughout the day for contemplative prayer, solitude, and silence. Fr. James will lead us in the prayer offices of Evening Prayer, Morning Prayer, and Noonday Prayer. He will also offer opportunities to hear confessions for the rite of reconciliation of penitents.
