Dandora COVID update

Our Kids in Dandora are Back in School!

The good news in the slums of Dandora: KDS/KDSS is back in session! After almost 10 months of being away because of COVID, the children were SO excited to be back in their classes! We received a report from Kenya Children’s Fund that the first 2 weeks have gone well, and also that the new student teacher in the secondary school is a KDSS graduate, and one of our own former All Souls sponsored young men, Daniel! They took a picture of him teaching and sent it to us. Daniel wrote to me that the children have been very receptive to him because he is “one of them”, having grown up in Dandora.

David returns to teach at his alma mater.

What’s been happening the last 10 months?

Since last March, like most schools, Kinyago-Dandora Schools were closed. The strict COVID curfews were very hard on the slum communities since most people who had work had to travel long distances on foot or by bus, and couldn’t make it back by the curfew. KCF stepped up, and has been using its resources to supply over 2000 meals a week to the community of Dandora. Many teachers sent lesson plans home with the meals. KCF was able to continue employing all its teachers and staff so they could provide for their families.

Please pray

Please continue to pray for our students. We will start our letters and prayer schedule back and forth to them next week.

  • for safety for them, both from COVID and from the risks of their environment- that they will be able to return to their studies with concentration and enthusiasm
  • for wisdom and discernment for the teachers, social workers and administration
  • for more sponsors for the children, and for KCF as they make decisions and seek more funding to replenish the supplies and food given out to the community during COVID
  • for Daniel, that God will give him insights and inspiration and strength as he teaches, as well as favor with the students

Sponsorship

If you would like to sponsor a child, visit the website: kenyachildrensfund.org

Sponsorship is the lifeblood of the school, and it also encourages the children that they have people who care about them and are praying for them. The children really love their sponsors, and cards and letters are extremely encouraging to them. Please consider bringing light to a child at KDS. General donations are also a huge help, as the school has a lot of restart expenses to make up.

Here are some updated photos of the students that All Souls sponsors as a church. In addition, many of the Souls sponsor additional children. All in all, these connections have built strong and lasting ties between the Souls and the KDS community.
