Join us for our almost-monthly Film Nights at All Souls! Gather with the Souls to watch a classic or somewhat contemporary film and discuss the impact of the film, its themes, artistic merit, or whatever you think needs discussing. Popcorn is provided and BYO other snacks and beverages.

Edna Spalding finds herself alone and broke on a small farm in the midst of the Great Depression when her husband, the Sheriff, is killed in an accident. Moses, a wandering Black man, helps her plant cotton to try to keep her farm and family together. She also takes in a blind boarder, Mr. Will, who lost his sight in the Great War. She must endure storms and harsh labor to try to make her mortgage payment on time. Sally Field won her 2nd Best Actress Oscar for this starring role.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

A naive youth leader is appointed to fill a vacancy in the US. Senate. His idealistic plans promptly collide with corruption at home and subterfuge from his hero in Washington. But he tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character. Starring Jimmy Stewart, directed by Frank Capra.

Black Narcissus

January 11

A convent of Anglican sisters travel to India to establish a school and hospital in the foothills of the Himalayas. They are confronted with a confounding inability to reshape the world around them and find themselves profoundly affected by their environment. Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, this award-winning film features jaw-dropping cinematography and art direction from Jack Cardiff and Alfred Junge.

Selma

Selma chronicles the three-month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a peaceful march from Selma to Montgomery and only encountered violence by his opponents. This is a riveting film that probes the motivations of Dr. King and other religious leaders as they fought to secure equal voting rights no matter the color of one’s skin.

Of Gods and Men

This is the true story of a Trappist monastery in Algeria where nine monks lived in harmony with the largely Muslim population of their village, providing medical help and comfort—drawing the village inhabitants to the love of Jesus Christ. The year is 1996 and as the film begins the village is confronted with acts of terrorism due to the ongoing Algerian Civil War. One evening the terrorists  break into their monastery demanding medical treatment for one of their group who has been shot. The consequences of their helping the terrorists is respected by some and abhorred by others. Under continuing threat for their safety, they must decide to leave or stay.

Touching the Void

In 1985, two British climbers make the first successful ascent of the west face of Siula Grande in South America. But when they get caught in a snowstorm on the way down, tragedy strikes and one climber must make a sobering ethical choice. His decision is still hotly debated in the climbing community today.
