Abide in Me: The Spiritual Practices of Discernment

Our Lent Catechesis Series will explore the family of spiritual practices that surround the process of discernment. These practices can allow God to bring abundance in our lives and build our relationships with others, all in the hope of bringing glory to God.

A broad view of discernment understands it as the capacity to recognize the presence of God in our lives and others so we may align ourselves with whatever God is doing in the body of Christ and the world. This is why Iganatius of Loyola defined the aim of discernment as “finding God in all things in order that we might love and serve God in all.”

To see God’s work we need to first clear away the debris in our lives that inhibits our spiritual sight. Therefore we begin with Confession. Confession allows us to Examen our lives to see how we receive joy and why we often feel alienated from God or others. Then the process of Discernment can begin, which often involves a process of Reconciliation with God and others.
